National survey to outline changing role of dads

A national survey aims to capture how fatherhood has changed over the years in Australia.

Aussie dads and father figures are being asked to share ‘how they dad’ for a national survey investigating the changing role of fatherhood.

The Fathering Project is launching the survey to help capture what a contemporary dad looks like and outline the current state of fathering in Australia.

The survey takes less than 2 minutes to complete.

CEO Wayne Bradshaw says the expectations of dads are changing as the roles of parents in the home, workplace and society evolve.

“Australian families don’t typically function the same way they did 20-30 years ago,” he explained.

“Fathering for me looks very different from what it looked like for my dad and even my grandad.”

The survey looks at the opinions and attitudes of dads of various ages to see how they deal with discipline, emotions and sharing the load in the family.

“The more we know about the state of fathering, the better equipped The Fathering Project will be to provide resources, programs and research to support fathers and father figures in raising healthy and happy children,” Mr Bradshaw said.

Father of three and TV and radio presenter Basil Zempilas says his fathering style is probably more hands-on than dads from previous generations.

“Dads pitch in, change nappies, warm bottles and get up when the kids wake up through the night. It’s how it is in this generation,” Basil said.

“Spending quality time with my kids is something that’s important for me.”
